When I tell people that I was born and raised in the Lower East Side of Manhattan (namely in the Baruch Houses housing projects) I'm met with surprise. My parents immigrated from Nigeria under the promise of work in their respective fields. But when this promise was unfulfilled, they had to fall into odd jobs: my dad learning cooking and my mom having to sell used goods on the sidewalk before the couple became restaurateurs in Manhattan's Meat-packing District in 1981.
When it came to school, I was fortunate enough to find my calling early in life. I attended The University of Hartford Art School and completed my B.S. in Visual Arts at the University of Old Westbury. Here, I found my first, real experience with collaboration with my roommate, the poet and rapper WordsWorth.
Yet, it was early 2000 that mapped the key turning point in my life. My dad passed away from liver disease and I had experienced my first job lay-off. When I couldn't find steady employment I became a freelance graphic artist and I used my flexible schedule for some overdue soul-searching.
I began to ask myself: if, along the road I was taking, whether or not I was where I wanted to be? And, when it was my turn to meet with my destination, how might I be remembered?
I searched for answers in audiobooks, and sponge-like, I absorbed many core principles espoused by my new playlist of spiritual gurus, financial achievers, and leading thinkers of our time.
I learned the power of the subconscious mind and the vital role it played on our thoughts--on what we can do and, more importantly, on what we can have. Most importantly, I learned that being a creative person had broader implications that simply music and art. As financial guru, Robert Kiyosaki writes, "We are all rich because we are all blessed with a mind; a mind full of ideas."
From him and others gurus, I learned that everyone is creative simply because everyone must become a creator, designing and molding their lives and the products and services which impact the lives of people around the world.
I wondered what it would be like to share these teachings and so I wanted to become an inspirational educator. Besides, for most of my life, I had always thought of myself as more than an artist. So in 2002, I revisited my inner essence, launching T.A.I.W.O. (Today's Artist Inspires the World Over). The company's first task was a social networking website whose mission was to help all creative types find collaborations (for example: a painter needing a photographer). Two years later, I began writing Collabetition.
Currently, Collabetition is aimed at adults, both in and just entering the business world. I've considered writing a version tailored for younger audiences. For now 'The Land of Intuit' along with 'Katrina and the Animals' speak to several themes already highlighted in Collabetition: teamwork, trust, following your dreams, managing fear--to name a few.
